JORGENSEN POWERS TO KATANA VICTORY IN AGASSIZ
BY STEVEN TUTTLE
Agassiz, B.C. - Ken Jorgensen of Surrey, B.C. won the Katana Sportsman Series Jim Darby Memorial season opener in strong fashion Saturday night, April 26, in front of a full house at Agassiz Speedway.
Despite enduring heavy lap traffic, Jorgensen was able to pull away from a fierce battle between Surrey's Dave Hemrich and Victoria's Brent Morris. The two battled lap after lap around the scenic, but tight, quarter mile Agassiz oval, until, with Morris running second, and Hemrich third, contact was made in turn one, spinning Morris to third position. It was all Jorgensen needed, who powered his way to an impressive season opening win.
Race favorite Jason Beaulieu sped to a new Katana track record in a cooling qualifying session, but spun early in the 100 lap main event and was unable to challenge for the lead at the end.
Race Notes - Geoff Morris of Victoria suffered engine failure during afternoon hot laps. His crew pulled and installed a new engine in time for the feature. Kelowna's Don Nichols, a 57 year old rookie in the series, had an impressive debut by winning the Katana heat race. Don's last time behind the wheel was in 1976 at the late Langley Speedway.
Ironically, during that heat with fellow rookie Dustin Lengert from Penticton (who's 17) the two tangled while racing for the lead. Lengert was black flagged, Nichols was declared the winner.
In another twist, Nichols and Dustin's father Steve Lengert made contact during the main event on the front straight with Lengert almost upside down into the infield fence. Both cars were too damaged to continue.
Series returns June 28-30 at Saratoga Speedway in Campbell River.
